Develop a sitcom, either from scratch or developing an existing idea. We will go through the process of devising, plotting and writing scenes for a sitcom. We will begin with the comedy world your show takes place in. This is the style, tone, look, feel. And we will take a close look at your characters - where to find inspiration, the importance of inner conflict and how to create a funny dynamic between characters.
Then we will look at finding the right setting for the characters, and the importance of the "trap" that holds them all together. We will move on to starting the first episode and consider the classic cyclical structure versus developing storylines across episodes.
We will then start plotting an entire episode of your sitcom, studying various strategies for creating plots.
Throughout the process you will watch clips from classic TV sitcoms on youtube, to illustrate various points and for inspiration, and you will receive detailed handouts and feedback on the work you share with the group.
